Yes there is a big difference! Have you ever walked into someone’s house and felt inferior, like you shouldn’t sit down for fear of putting a cushion out of place? That to me is not a home, but a house! A home is somewhere you feel immediately welcome and can relax and be yourself. That is the key, being yourself. The question is, who are we when we are in our own homes? Are you the homeowner, the nanny, the maid or the cook? Do you sometimes even try to just be a piece of furniture to take a break and do nothing? I imagine for most of us the answer will be yes to at least one of the above. This is where the lines can get blurred and we can lose the purpose of our homes. Yes, we need to clean, cook and play with the children. But we also need to be ourselves more than anything else.
So how do we be ourselves, create a home and keep up with everything else? It is fairly easy and just takes a little planning.
Firstly, before anything else, you need to create a happy home. This needs to be your happy place. Last year, I was sat feeling rather moody and realised that the room around me was most likely bringing me down. The paint had dulled, the furniture belonged to my late parents and there was no happiness or warmth in the room whatsoever. We decided it was time to have a change. We pained the whole room a lighter & brighter colour, bought some new furniture that we really liked and added some happy items such as up to date family photos, trip memories, New lamps, a lovely new rug. Wow, what an incredible difference!! Most other rooms in the house quickly followed suit. It is now my new happy place and is where I am sat right now in my slippers smiling like an idiot to myself. It’s not even that new anymore but still makes me really happy.
Next, you need to plan the tasks that take you away from being you. Grab a planner (if you don’t have one, you can download one HERE) and work out some time to clean, cook, play and sort bills. I also have some downloadable Planners for each of these tasks - click on each one to take a look and see if they can help you.
So what now? In between the gaps it’s time to be you. So what do you want to do? Read? Sew? Craft? Write? Entertain? Everyone will be different. Perhaps a little trial and error needs to be done. Have you always fancied trying your hand at painting? Do you want to have time to meditate? The possibilities are endless! But by creating the time for the tasks and having the rest of your time to be you, you have now organised a happy home 🏡
